| The Problem Of Evil: Why Do “Good” People Do Bad Things?
One of the interesting things about "The Lucifer Effect" is how a secular psychologist is embracing a theological term like "evil." The secular world has many psychological and medical terms to describe the various human conditions. But "evil" conjures up images of the supernatural, a throwback to an age of ignorance, where there was a lack of "understanding" about simple psychiatry. "Evil" is a place with many unopened doors and untraveled, darkened corridors of the mind — something that's out of control. And in a sense, that's what Zimbardo means: the turning of a screw can happen so slowly. The vast distance that one travels, from a place of goodness and safety, to a place of horrors and mayhem, is almost imperceptible. Evil is a term theologians know very well. In fact, it was an atheist who admitted to me that religion was discovered long before science, the pervasiveness of man's evil nature.
George Osborne's green gimmick
George Osborne thinks he has an answer to our saving malaise: a green individual savings account. This is being referred to as the "Gisa" (no, we don't know how to pronounce it, either, though we think it might rhyme with Lisa). Investors could apparently save thousands by putting their money into tax-free "green Isas'' (which would have a bigger allowance of, say, £9,000, rather than £7,000 for ordinary Isas) and reduce carbon emissions at the same time. It is not just savers who will benefit -qualifying companies will be boosted by billions in extra revenue. To qualify for inclusion in a Gisa, companies would need to gain a green kitemark. The likes of Marks & Spencer and GlaxoSmithKline, which are committed to big reductions in their carbon emissions would probably be eligible.
Video: Gang members speak out
Try telling my husband, who is a police officer, that these type of gangs do not cause problems or trying telling gang members robbery/rape/knife and gun victims the same. My husband had to work New Year's Eve when silly gangs like the 'IVS' were out in force, stabbing one another. My husband was called to one such incident only to be given a load of verbal abuse by one of the 'victims'. Why should my husband be trated like that? The same abuse was also dished out to the paramedics who are trying to help these idiots. I would let them bleed to death if I were in that position being abused by idiots who carry knives - all gang members do. I am fortunate to live in a nice area of Kent where gangs of youths do not wander the streets trying to imtimidate 'normal' decent citizens. My advice to these gang members - get a life, it's not big, it's not clever and GROW UP.
Clutter can be taxing: Rescue from piles of paper just a binder away
Michele Blake had a paper problem. Letters, catalogs, bills and work-related papers were cluttering up her North Easton, Mass., home. "I wasn't managing paper very well," Blake, 51, said. "I would look around, and all the clutter would really bother me." Come tax time, she would have to hunt down everything she needed, and then she would dump all the receipts and other papers onto her desk and start to feel crushed under the weight of it all. "I would feel overwhelmed by it," she said. "I had stuff all over, and I couldn't find something I needed, so it would take me a good week to get it together and work on it all." It can be overwhelming enough just to think about doing your taxes. But if you're disorganized, tax time brings extra angst as you dread having to search for receipts and other documents you know you need but may not be able to find easily.
Two levies, two results in Fairless
Issue 19, a new 5-year 3.3-mill emergency levy, was overwhelming defeated with more than 69 percent of voters going against the districts request for more money. The proposed levy would have generated approximately $650,000 every year. It would have cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $101 a year. District officials now may face the realities of possible cuts to school programs and positions. Over the last three years, the district has cut eight positions through attrition in an attempt to save money. Board members could not be reached for comment Tuesday. In Navarre, Patsy Gordon, and her mother, Ruby Rogers, both said that the well for school money is slowing drying up for Fairless. I voted no on both issues, said Gordon, as her mother nodded in agreement.
Patchwork E-Filing Frustrates Lawyers
When Chicago litigator Victor Henderson sends an assistant to the Cook County Courthouse in Chicago to retrieve a filing, he hopes for a bit of luck. "We send them over and cross our fingers and hope it will come back," said Henderson, an attorney in Holland & Knight's Chicago office. "The confidence level is only 80 or 90 percent that, if you ask for something, it's going to be there. With a lawsuit, it has to be 100 percent." That's one reason why Henderson is leading the Chicago Bar Association in an effort to have Cook County Circuit Court -- the second busiest in the country -- make case files accessible on the Internet, pushing the county to follow in the footsteps of some state courts in adopting a more fully electronic docket system. They're not alone.
Dreamlinux 3.0 Beta 3 Testdrive
I've followed closely the instructions and, after the installation, I could enjoy Compiz Fusion's effects on the desktop. The Engage dock was replaced with Avant Window Navigator after the driver setup. I wanted to see what caused these problems, so I re-installed everything. It seems that everything's related to the way you boot the Live CD. If you boot into GNOME, you will install on your computer Dreamlinux with GNOME ONLY (there is no way you can change this)! But if you choose XFCE, you will get both desktop environments on your system. With them, you will receive a bonus pack of glitches the ones I mentioned above. .
Yaqui casinos: 'More money, more problems'
Phil Harden plays the slot machines at Casino del Sol on the Pascua Yaqui reservation southwest of Tucson. The casino has helped to fund several projects and benefits for the tribe, including heath care and continuing education, but the millions in revenue gambling generates also has led to questions about where it all goes and created bitter divisions among tribal members. .
The Most Wanted List: International Terrorism
During periods of desperation, people often make hasty choices, and this is now such a period, but not a time for hasty decisions. May Nader run if it's what he wishes to do! Anyone opposed to it and using this to trying to tell others whether or not they can, or not, vote for him is just another pointy-headed pion fascist dictator wannabe. And they only deserve to be told this, that they're taking the anti-[democracy] position. I don't know anything about his campaign yet, and wonder if he's teaming up with Cynthia McKinney. I don't know why he wouldn't choose to do so, for she's a good candidate as far as I'm aware, and he's run for the Green Party before; although they burned him "good" last time. Not all supporters of the GP went along with that bad decision of the GP pointy-headed-bosses, PHBs, though.
The Morning After: Race or Gender? Neither.
If either Clinton or Obama gets the nomination, I will vote for NEITHER. I'm sick of the clones!!! WE need to take our country back from shameful Nazi demon Rupert Murdoch because without a truly free press we are doomed. Welcome Everyone to the Disunited States of Fascism. If you didn't wake up before, you'll wake when you end up in one of Haliburton's Detention Centers. They are just waiting for you. .
In the cards: World Series of Poker blog
And to bring my spirits up that much more, didn't they just start World War III or something of the sort? Barring some questionable fiscal outcomes, I've actually had a wonderfully memorable series this year. But my head is in a million different places right now, both good and bad. I just don't know if this is the right frame of mind to play perfect poker for 16 hour sessions. So I am uncertain how I feel about investing $10,000 in what would be, under the best of circumstances, a high variance gamble. I have gotten various offers of various seriousness from people who say that if I don't want to put up my own money, they would be happy to invest in me for a percentage of whatever I win. But if I'm not comfortable with the idea of losing my own money, I'm not sure how I feel about losing other people's.
