| Bush Takes Jab At Outgoing Indy Mayor
NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- In a speech criticizing congressional Democrats for what he called a tax-and-spend philosophy, President George W. Bush localized his argument for his Indiana audience Tuesday, saying Indianapolis' mayor lost his re-election bid because he backed tax raises. "Voters in your capital voted for Greg Ballard and ousted an incumbent mayor in large part because the incumbent mayor supported raising taxes. ... (We) need to make sure that message is heard in the nation's capital," Bush told hundreds during a speech in New Albany in far southern Indiana. Ballard, a Republican and political newcomer who defeated Bart Peterson in last week's election, was one of the speech's attendees. Bush devoted just three sentences to the Indianapolis issue during what otherwise was a speech against congressional Democrats' budget priorities.
ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY OUTLOOK
A more fact-based and empirical approach to policymaking promises systematically better results. . . . To address [data] gaps, policymakers should invest in collecting additional data and tracking a core set of indicators over time. They must also set clear policy targets and incorporate indicators and reporting into policy formation, and shift toward more analytically rigorous environmental protection efforts at the global, regional, national, state/provincial, local, and corporate scales. . . . The absence of broadly-collected and methodologically-consistent indicators for even basic concerns such as water quality--and the complete lack of time-series data for most countries--hampers efforts to shift pollution control and natural resource management onto more empirical foundations.[9] The EPI concedes that lack of data makes it impossible to consider numerous relevant environmental issues in constructing an international performance ranking.[10] One area in which data is easy to come by or estimate confidently from resource-use models is energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, and it is on this metric that the United States fares poorly in the EPI's methodology because the EPI assigns one-quarter of its weighting to three climate change metrics.
40% of Scots now support independence
I cannot see what London can do to turn this around short of putting the tanks in. It looks unstoppable. The ones that are more against "women and pensioners" are probably nervous about the economics of it all rather than the principle. The more the UK starts to unwind economically (as it will) they will start to see an independent Scotland as being a safer bet for their families and the security of their pensions. .
Afghanistan: Prince Harry To Be Pulled Out Of Combat Zone
Internet sites. The British Defense Ministry, which confirmed the Internet reports, has released video footage of Prince Harry that was recorded in Helmand Province during January and February: The 23-year-old prince is one of about 7,700 British soldiers stationed in Afghanistan -- most of them in Helmand Province. He is the first British royal to be sent on active combat duty in more than a quarter-century. The news leak about his deployment has prompted several British newspapers to call for his return, saying that he is a high-level target and that his presence in Helmand Province threatens the safety of other soldiers in his unit. Taliban Response The Taliban has downplayed the significance of Prince Harry's presence in Afghanistan.
Explorers piling up bills, businesses say
Local businesses say the Great Falls Explorers professional basketball team and team owner Michael Tuckman of Seattle are racking up more than points this season. They say Tuckman has between $40,000 and $50,000 in outstanding bills. Tuckman said Monday night that he has outstanding bills with two Great Falls hotels but denied any responsibility for the other expenses, saying they were accrued prior to his taking ownership of the Explorers on Nov. 24 from Apex Sportstainment. .

12 Sorry, you'll have to do better than that.I was talking about implementing an international standard which protects our public data from proprietary lock-in. Nothing to do with MS hating. If you disagree, you'll need to explain why you think it is better for our data to be beholden to a single, massive multinational company rather than open and accessible from any computer. .
Kleinberg, Liepe receive Sloan fellowships
Two Cornell faculty members have been awarded fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation: Robert Kleinberg '97, assistant professor of computer science, and Matthias Liepe, assistant professor of physics. Kleinberg received his Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2005 and joined the Cornell faculty in 2006. He studies the mathematical foundations of algorithm design, especially questions regarding what can or can't be computed given limited access to information about a problem. He will apply the Sloan Fellowship to study how computers can learn from experience. This particularly applies to network routing where computers often must make decisions about how to route traffic without knowing the condition of the entire network. Liepe came to Cornell in 2001 as a researcher and joined the faculty two years ago.
