America crazy about breadbox on wheels called Smart car
With gas prices headed squarely past the $3-a-gallon mark again, "Timing couldn't be any better," says Bob Cosmai, a consultant and former CEO of Hyundai Motor America. The Smart, which will be displayed starting later this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show, isn't new - only new to most of the USA. The original idea hearkens back to the 1970s, but took off after Nicolas Hayek, who founded the Swatch wristwatch line, announced in 1989 that he wanted to bring a newfangled small car to market. The Smart name comes from combining the S from Swatch, the M from Mercedes and ART. Production of the Smart ForTwo, as the model is known, began in Hambach, France, in 1998. Daimler flirted with the idea of bringing it to the USA from the start. In 2004, the plan was to import the four-passenger sport-utility model.
Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce pulls two off panel
As a Chamber member I invest annual dues to pay for business support services for large and small businesses, as well as good policy that will reflect what Chamber members want. I am curious to see if my annual dues are part of some illegal transition within the Chamber or part of a PAC that members are unaware of. Are they contracting a certain congressman's ex C.O.S.? The Chamber is funded heavily through membership dues and special events, meaning, without members there is no Chamber. Without members, Terry and Ken cannot maintain the lifestyles they have become accustomed to. One is the puppet master and the other the puppet. Let's get leadership without arrogance like Terry, and leadership with a backbone, unlike Ken. Kudos Caller for breaking the story! Kudos to Damon for wanting to check the books.
Billionaire joins charge on batteries
BILLIONAIRE corporate raider turned ecology activist Vincent Bollore today opened a factory to produce supercapacitators that can be used for electric cars that could fill the streets from Tokyo to Turin. The €36 million ($60 million) factory, on the site of a family's paper business started in 1822, will produce 100,000 supercapacitators - electric energy storage elements - per year, and production can be ramped up quickly. It is close to a plant that makes 10,000 lithium-metal-polymer batteries a year. Investments in the project so far total at least €250 million ($420 million), Mr Bollore said during a trip to the site. "When we started some 14 years ago with the idea of an electric car, everybody laughed at us," Mr Bollore said at the family manor where the factory inauguration was celebrated.

Heavenly Tax Havens
In 1980, there were just three flat-tax jurisdictions. Today, prompted by Estonia's 1994 reform, there are 25 governments with simple and fair flat-tax regimes. All of these reforms have yielded big benefits -- particularly for the nations that have been the most aggressive tax cutters, notably Ireland, Estonia and Slovakia. But tax rates are just part of the equation. In an ideal tax system, income also should be taxed just one time. This means no death tax, no wealth tax and no double taxation of interest, dividends or capital gains. Politicians often are tempted to impose extra layers of tax on saving and investment, both because they think such policies will give them more money to spend and because voters sometimes are sympathetic to class-warfare campaigns to "tax the rich." Yet the academic literature increasingly shows that excess taxation of capital income causes significant economic damage, largely because people have less incentive to set aside some of today's income to finance tomorrow's growth.
Motorcyclist, pursued by police, dies after slamming into rig
Hendrickson of New Tazewell died in the 5:54 p.m. Monday crash, according to a report filed by THP Trooper Robert Brooks. Hendrickson was driving a Yamaha motorcycle at a high rate of speed and was being pursued on State Highway 33 by an officer with the New Tazewell Police Department, Brooks noted. Because of the high speeds involved in the chase through New Tazewell, officers terminated the pursuit, according to Brooks' report. Hendrickson continued on State Highway 33 until he encountered a tractor-trailer rig making a turn near the intersection with U.S. Highway 25E. The motorcycle struck the front of the turning trailer. Hendrickson was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. David Earl Smith II, 35, of Harrogate, who was driving the rig, was not injured.
Interest Rates, Congress, and Your Mortgage
Rates can rise, as they did last week, when investors react to news, such as the Fed cut, and expect it to strengthen the economy or spur inflation, explains Doug Duncan, chief economist at the Mortgage Bankers Association. According to MBA's weekly survey, the average interest rates for 30- and 15-year fixed mortgages increased about a tenth of a percentage point over the past week, to 5.6 percent and 5.04 percent, respectively. .
Toyota Sticking To Demure Script. Ford Who?
Toyota Motor Sales U.S. chief Jim Lentz wouldn't comment about whether he thought Toyota would surpass Ford Motor Co. in market sharethis year, and said it really doesn't matter. "We don't adjust our plans based on their performance," Lentz said. "I'm not going to, as the head of Toyota, make bad business decisions just to chase someone else." He added that Toyota doesn't advertise its ranking for specific products, and doesn't believe it's something that customers care about. That's not what Ford thinks. "People don't care too much about whether their car is the top brand, but in pickups, that's not the case…truck buyers like to know they are part of a winner," says Ford Division marketing chief Barry Engle. Ford is the top pickup truck brand in the U.S., but that is in large part because General Motors splits up its full-size pickup trucks sales between the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra.
