Web gamblers betting on Barack Obama

According to several overseas online exchanges, Obama is now a virtual lock to win all the upcoming primaries, including Texas and Ohio — the states Hillary Clinton is pinning her hopes on.

And he's the even-money favorite to be elected President in November.

"Obama has all the momentum, and the betting odds reflect that," said Steve Budin, an oddsmaker at sportsinfo.com who puts Obama's likelihood of being President at 4-5, with Clinton and John McCain both at 3-2.

And the payoffs can rival any race track.

Gabriel Weil, 22-year-old college student, has made about $1,500, much of it by shorting Rudy Giuliani — selling shares in the former mayor that he did not yet own and assuming he could buy them later at a lower price and pocket the difference.

Forecast: No housing recovery until 2009

A widening credit crunch and rising risks of a US recession will delay the Boston housing market's recovery until mid-2009, according to a new forecast.

House prices in the Boston metropolitan area, which have fallen 7 percent since their 2005 peak, will decline another 8 percent before starting to recover in the middle of 2009, Moody's Economy.com said yesterday.

The forecast has "gotten a little bit worse," said Gus Faucher, director of macroeconomics at the Philadelphia economic consulting firm. "We expect prices to bottom out in 2009."

Most economists now agree US and local housing prices will fall through 2008 and won't begin to rise again until next year.

For example, Freddie Mac said yesterday that house prices would continued to decline through 2009.

The ugly truth in Afghanistan

You can go crow from the rooftops and no one will censor you. The Globe and Mail has the right (and perhaps even the obligation at times) to shut down any debate it so desires. Whether it adequately covers a particular news topic such as Afghanistan is an entirely different matter. My guess, Bert, is that you were entirely happy with the investigative journalism that went on at the time of Adscam, which simply indicates that you are a partisan. There's nothing per se wrong with that, it's just a bit limiting ;-). Posted 01/03/08 at 1:03 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

JAQUITTA'S JOURNEY: Read Her Blog

I wanted to update you on what's been going on with me lately.

I have finally gotten adjusted to my new look and new super short hair. Everyone has been so kind about the new look. The compliments are so very flattering. I thank you very, very much. I love it too! It's soooooo easy... I wash it and go. I spray a leave in conditioner on it, and then I apply this butter cream called Miss Jessie's Curly Butter cream in my hair that Monica Pearson gave me and I'm out the door. I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! The butter cream smells WONDERFUL, and it locks in my curls. I had heard about Miss Jessie's products before, but never tried them until Monica bought some for me. Now, I'm hooked and wanted to tell you about it as well. Thanks Monica!

I have had quite a few people who have asked who my hairstylist is now that I have this new look.

Pregnancy - Other Types Of Pain Relief

Tens devices are about the size of a small radio and are connected to electrodes placed on the skin, usually on your lower back. Electrical impulses result in a tingling sensation, which some women find annoying. The side effects of tens are usually no more than some skin irritation where the pads are stuck to the back. The electrical impulses do not affect the baby. Most studies of tens in labor have found it to be only mildly effective in reducing labor pain.

World stocks routed on fears for economy

US stock markets were closed on Monday for a holiday, but US stock index futures were down sharply suggesting investors were not putting much hope on Wall Street leading a rebound when it returns to business.

Elsewhere, Toronto's stock market was down around 4.5 percent and Japan's benchmark Nikkei average earlier lost 3.86 percent to close at a two-year low.

"Risk aversion is widespread as the market thinks (the economic downturn) is not just a US centric story," said Paul Robson, currency strategist at RBS Global Banking.

Bear market?

Investors were carrying through from last week's concern that a fiscal stimulus proposed by President George W. Bush would not be enough to stop the U.S. economy from falling into recession and that the downturn will spread.
